Illinois School Safety Drill Act
Lyons School District 103 complies with the Illinois School Safety Drill Act - 105 ILCS 128/ School Safety Drill Act. The purpose of this Act is to establish minimum requirements and standards for schools to conduct school safety drills and review school emergency and crisis response plans. The Illinois School Safety Drill Act also encourages collaboration between schools and first responders to work together for the safety of children.
All schools in Lyons School District 103 are required to conduct the following drills annually:
- 3 evacuation drills: these are commonly referred to as fire drills. One of these drills must have the fire department present to observe and provide direction and feedback
- 1 severe weather/shelter in place drill: this is commonly referred to as a tornado drill
- 1 bus evacuation drill in coordination with transportation partners
- 1 law enforcement drill: this is commonly referred to as a lockdown drill. There must be law enforcement present to observe and provide direction and feedback for this drill.
Each public school district, through its school board or the board’s designee, shall conduct a minimum of one annual meeting at which it will review each school building’s emergency and crisis response plans, protocols, and procedures and each building’s compliance with the school safety drill programs.
Lyons School District 103 usually completes this annual meeting prior to October 15th and invites all of our first responder partners. This includes the police departments and fire departments from our surrounding communities of Brookfield, Forest View, Lyons, McCook, and Stickney.
