EMERGENCY DAYS/SNOW DAYS/NO SCHOOL DAYS
This past week of January 28 – February 1, 2019 is the perfect example of difficult determinations.
Many variables go into these decisions:
- Amount of snow
- Timing of snow
- Wind Chills
We philosophically do not believe in an approach which some districts use – the late start. Late starts at the elementary level can be very problematic for parents. If a late start is called for 9:30 a.m. or 10:00 a.m., parents have to figure out what they have to do for their young child(ren) when having to leave for work at 8:30 a.m.
Keeping school open on days when the snowfall is manageable (Monday, January 28th) gives parents 2 options - send children to school or keep them home (parental decision). Closing school gives working parents only 1 option – they need to find childcare.
I hope this explains a very difficult decision-making process.
